Geolocation Walk Series Inspired By The Odyssey And Performed By Local Residents Launches Across The Yorkshire Coast

Animated Objects and Yorkshire Coast BID have announced the latest installment in the special three-year legacy project 'The Odyssey: An Epic Adventure on the Yorkshire Coast’, with the launch of a geolocation adventure story trail.

The project, which is a first of its kind to take place on the Yorkshire Coast, was developed over hundreds of hours during the national lockdown and showcases over 30 different local storytellers, performers and composers from across the whole Yorkshire Coast community.

The local voices and performers bring to life Homer’s classic tale of The Odyssey and the Trojan Wars all of which can be enjoyed against the beautiful backdrop of the Yorkshire Coast’s towns and villages. A truly unique experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the country.

The first episode, titled ‘The Gathering Storm’ tells the story of how the Trojan wars began and will be available to visitors and communities along the coast from Monday 10th May via the Echoes app. Here, listeners can enjoy tales of ancient gods and epic battles told by the local community; with the story being triggered at various point by GPS.

The free walking series, offers a range of accessible routes and is in available in over 25 different locations along the coast. The story is split into a number of ‘discovery trails’ in Bridlington, Filey, Hornsea, Scarborough, Withernsea and Whitby, where chapters lead visitors from one location to another, introducing them to areas they may not have explored before. There is also a number of other routes to be enjoyed at a relaxed pace meaning the whole trail can be enjoyed by everyone.

Lee Threadgold, artistic director of Animated Objects said: “We’re really excited to be bringing the first part of the story to people along the coast by geolocation. We’ve written and produced the audio story specifically to be enjoyed in the open air, and we’ve chosen locations that showcase the natural beauty of this incredible region.”

The project is funded by the Yorkshire Coast BID; creating opportunities for people to discover, explore and enjoy the coast throughout the year.

Chief Executive of Yorkshire Coast BID, Kerry Carruthers commented on the launch: “We are thrilled to be supporting this amazing and unique project, aimed at supporting the Yorkshire Coast communities over the next three years.

“The walking series is a fantastic way for people to explore our towns across the coast all whilst hearing the epic tale of the Odyssey told by local residents.”

Future events that will form part of 'The Odyssey: An Epic Adventure on the Yorkshire Coast’ including touring exhibitions; giant puppets; and a world record attempt with the creation of Yorkshire’s own version of the Trojan horse are also in the pipeline.
