Home Show Highlights The Growing Trend For Sustainable Furniture

The rising popularity of pre-loved furniture and sustainable homewares is set to take centre stage at the Vintage Home Show on Sunday, 2 February 2025, at Pudsey Civic Hall, Leeds.

The event will showcase mid-century and vintage furniture and homewares, allowing visitors to embrace the pre-loved movement and discover unique, environmentally friendly pieces for their homes.

In the UK, the trend has surged as consumers increasingly turn to mid-century furniture for its craftsmanship and minimise environmental impact. Brits are increasingly avoiding mass-market pieces driven by environmental consciousness, economic pressures, and the desire for distinctive, characterful designs.

An estimated 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded annually in the UK, with 80% ending up in landfills.
Vintage furniture offers a carbon footprint 16 times smaller than mass-produced modern pieces, making it an eco-conscious choice.
The furniture recycling market is projected to grow at 7.00% a year.

The pre-loved furniture movement has also gained traction on social media, where platforms like TikTok and Instagram amplify its appeal. With hashtags For instance, on TikTok, the hashtag #antiques has garnered over 2.1 billion views, and #midcenturymodern has accumulated over 1.6 billion views. Shopping for pre-loved has become a cultural trend embraced by younger generations seeking environmentally friendly and creative ways to personalise their spaces.

The cost of living crisis has further spurred the popularity of pre-loved furniture, which provides a cost-effective alternative to buying new. Additionally, trends for 2025 lean toward darker, ornate vintage styles and natural materials such as bamboo and rattan, making vintage furniture a stylish and sustainable choice.

Lisa Doel, organiser of the Vintage Home Show, said:
“The Vintage Home Show allows you to discover how vintage, mid-century and retro furniture and homewares can enhance your home while helping protect the environment. Whether you're seeking inspiration and unique pieces or simply want to explore this growing trend, the show offers something for everyone.”

The Vintage Home Show is the perfect destination for anyone exploring these trends. With 40 exhibitors, the event will feature a range of mid-century and vintage furniture, lighting, ceramics, kitchenallia and artwork from independent UK dealers.
