As the festive season approaches, families across the country will be heading out to pick up their new, real Christmas tree - the focal point of their home decorations.
But transporting these seasonal staples home is more than just festive fun. It’s a task that requires care, preparation, and a nod to the Highway Code to ensure safety on the roads, as neglecting the rules could turn a merry outing into a costly mistake.
Driving home with a Christmas tree can lead to more than just a car full of needles. Done incorrectly, it could land drivers with fines, points on their licence, or even damage their car.
GAP Insurance provider,
ALA Insurance, shares what UK motorists need to know to avoid turning Christmas cheer into festive fear.
Key Considerations for Transporting a Christmas Tree
Transporting a Christmas tree might seem straightforward, but it’s important to consider how your insurance policy applies. If an improperly secured tree causes an accident or damages another vehicle, you could be held liable and insurers may deny claims if negligence is involved. Additionally, transporting a tree inside your car could lead to interior damage, which many policies won’t cover as wear and tear.
Secure Loading is Key
A loose or poorly secured tree isn’t just a safety risk—it’s illegal. Under
Highway Code Rule 98, all loads must be securely fastened to prevent hazards for other road users. A loose or poorly secured Christmas tree can lead to fines, points on your licence, or even more serious repercussions if it causes an accident. Drivers must ensure their load is stable, with overhangs marked clearly (a red flag for more than 1 metre, reflectors for over 2 metres).
View Obstructions
Drivers must ensure their tree doesn’t obstruct their view. As highlighted by
Highway Code Rule 229, any load blocking the windscreen or mirrors is illegal and could result in penalties.
Drive Smart
Christmas trees affect aerodynamics. Experts advise driving at lower speeds and checking regularly for movement to keep both tree and car intact.
Secure the tree properly with strong straps, and if it overhangs the car, ensure you’ve attached the required red flags or reflectors. Drive carefully, avoiding sharp turns or sudden stops, and double-check that the tree doesn’t block your view. Taking these precautions helps keep everyone safe on the road while keeping the holiday spirit intact.
