Exclusive: Interview With Colonel Tom Moore

In these unprecedented times we all need a diversion from what is going on in the world right now. Of course it had to be a Yorkshireman who would become a national treasure as he made the headlines with his walk of 100 laps of his garden to raise money for the NHS. Captain Tom Moore has now been made a Colonel, is the oldest person to have a Number 1 single in the charts and is the latest recipient to receive a Blue Peter badge!

Although he now lives in Berkshire, you might be able to take Tom out of Yorkshire but you cannot take Yorkshire out of Tom. Here is my exclusive interview with the World War 2 veteran and champion fundraiser.

How does it feel to possibly having a Number 1 record in the charts?

To reach number one was such an amazing experience, I never imagined this happening in my wildest dreams

What made you decide to do the sponsored walk of your garden?

As a family we agreed that a challenge to help me in my recuperation and mark my 100th birthday could also raise money for our wonderful NHS.

How do you feel about the Spitfire fly past that has been planned for you?

The most amazing part of seeing and hearing the planes was that they were flying in peace, the last time I saw and heard them they were flying in anger.

Did you ever feel like giving in and not doing the 100 Laps of your garden?

No, I’m a Yorkshireman, I would never ever give in and I had to do it for all the NHS heroes doing such a magnificent job.

You are originally from Keighley, what do you miss about Yorkshire?

I have so many happy memories of living in this most wonderful county. Yorkshire and my home town of Keighley remain in my heart. I would like to thank them for all their support.

Do you have a favourite place you liked to visit in Yorkshire?

Keighley (of course), I’m also fond of Grassington and Ilkley Moor.

What is your secret of living to 100 years old?

Have Purpose, be responsible for own actions, and believe that tomorrow will be a good day.
