Interview With Julia Scheeser

Julia Scheeser has recently released her debut album, Kopfkino. Currently best known as a sync artist, dubbing recordings into German for cinematic release, her voice is already known but her sound as an artist in her own right is being defined. Kopfkino is a joyous pop fest which hooks you in from the moment you press play. With her album blasting in the background, we decided to catch up with her and find out a little more.

Hi Julia, first of all how are you?

I’m good! Thank you so much for asking. What a kind way to start an interview.

How have you found the lockdown experience has impacted your creativity?

It comes and goes as it always does. But as I have plenty of time to think about whatever comes to my mind, there are many different lyric ideas, that pop into my head.

For those not in the know, can you tell us a little about yourself...

For sure. My Name is Julia, I just turned 23 and I’m that girl in class, who never stops singing. Everybody had one of these girls in class, I’m one of them.

I was raised in a house at the countryside of southern Germany by my parents and grandparents, who are musicians and artists and I followed in their footsteps.

Music has been my output for as long as I can remember.

While your voice is not immediately known in the UK, millions of Disney fans may already know who you are. Tell us why...

I had the honour to sing the German voice of Princess Jasmine and Princess Belle in Disney's live action movies over the last couple of years.

How did you find voicing such beloved characters?

I love it! It’s the best job I could wish for and it makes so many people happy to listen to these songs. That’s a real pleasure.

You are now releasing your debut solo album, tell is a little about the writing and recording process.

I wrote all of the songs with Joshua Lange and Leonard Ottolien. Both of them are good friends and beloved colleagues. I told them about my stories and ideas I wanted to write about and together we cleaned up the mess in my head and made songs out of it.

Every single song has a personal story in the background and that’s what makes it so special to me. Joshua also produced the whole album.

The album is called Kopfkino, how did you land on the title?

Oh, I remember sitting in the car from Berlin to Hannover with Joshua and thinking about the title for hours. We had literally nothing for a looong time and then it just popped up in my head. Kopfkino would mean head cinema, if you translate it. It makes perfect sense, because as I told you, all the songs have a personal story so it’s my personal head cinema, that I set to music. And the people know my voice from cinema, so it has a relationship to that.

Which song are you most excited for people to hear?

That’s a question I can not really answer. All of these songs are my babies and it’s super hard to pick one.

If you could achieve one thing with the record, what would it be?

I want to touch people with my music. That’s what I do it for. There’s nothing compared to the feeling, that I have when I am on stage and somebody cries or laughs or however reacts to my songs emotionally.

Comparisons are inevitable in this industry, who would you expect to be compared to?

I do not like comparisons. Compare me to somebody, who writes songs, that mean something and I’m happy.

What has been the best feedback you have received to date?

Somebody at Disney World in Florida told me, that he was inspired by my vocal control. I remember that compliment, because it was so special. Normally people tell you something about the songs or the performance or about what you wear. And don’t get me wrong, all
of these words are so cute and mean the world to me. But this guy just said something, that honoured my hard work with my voice, that I do for so long and it will never end. So that was special feedback, which I liked a lot.

If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?

As I record German music, I’ll pick German ones.

Juli (I like her voice a lot and my very first CD was by this band. It was a big influence)

Madeleine Juno (I really like her lyrics)

Wilhelmine (Her songs are stuck in my head for weeks)

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?

I’d love to jam with Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga once. I could name so many people for this question, but these two ladies were a very important influence when I was young and I dreamed of making music with them several times.

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?

The first song I thought of was Dear Mr. President by P!nk.

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?

Oh, I’d love to play myself. It’s one of my big dreams to act in a movie.

Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…

As you were interested in songs, that are special to me: I always listen to Up In The Sky by 77 Bombay Street when a plane takes off. My best friend played it to me years ago and I always think of him when I’m flying somewhere. This song protects me.
