Interview With Merrill Osmond Ahead Of Yorkshire Concert
Graham Clark, Features Writer
Merrill Osmond is the lead singer of the world famous Osmond family and also an established solo artist. The Osmonds have produced 47 platinum and gold records and no other recording artists have earned as many gold records in one year as the Osmond family.

It is Merrill's voice that you hear on the hits such as One Bad Apple, Let Me In, Love Me For A Reason and Crazy Horses. In December he is touring the UK with his Christmas show which visits Bradford on Thursday 12 December. I spoke to Merrill about the tour and the Osmonds from a sunny afternoon in Utah.

What can we expect from the show?
I will be performing all the Osmonds' hits with a full band along with a selection of Christmas songs. There will be some video footage too that has not been seen before, so it will be a home spun Christmas show: a combination of hits and videos and also appearing will be David, my nephew who will be doing some big band songs, a few duets. It will be a great evening.

Have you been to Bradford before?
Yes, I've been there a few times. England though is my second home, I always love the people there, they are wonderful.

What was it like in the 1970's with the Osmond mania?
I don't think I was prepared, none of us were really. I was only 19 years old at the time when we arrived at Heathrow and all the fans were there.
There were so many there that the balcony fell down. I don't think I will ever forget it. I was worried too about the fans who were also getting crushed up against the barrier and then the ones trying to get into the limousines. Paul McCartney described it to me as Osmond mania and it was.
On one of the shows we tried to do Crazy Horses but had to be taken off stage for the fans safety, we came back on but they had to take us off again.

The whole family have spent a lot of time in the UK
I have been coming back every year since the 1970's. I should buy a place there! We have the Christmas tour in December, then I am doing some solo dates and also doing some shows at Butlins. I am then back again in November 2020.

Will there ever be a tour with all the Osmonds?
I don't know. There are a few health issues, but you never know.

Which artists do you admire?
I listen to a lot of the old stuff, I like variety in music. One artist I really admire is Paul McCartney, he is my hero, he has done so many different things and written so many great songs. I am a rock n roll singer and it suits my voice too. I have been to the Cavern in Liverpool and also played there. They even have a brick outside with my name on it. I am really looking forward to coming over again in December, but I know it will be cold. I have even bought a new jacket.
