Leeds City College Opens New Animal Centre

Leeds City College’s School of Land and Animal Sciences has opened a brand new animal centre at Temple Newsam’s Home Farm.

The centre was officially opened on 24 September by Leeds City Council's Deputy Director for Learning, Children and Families, Phil Mellen. It will house a range of small mammals and exotic animals including several species of snakes, lizards and geckos, rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, chipmunks and sugar gliders.

The 100m2 purpose-built space was created in-line with industry standards, complying with current changes in pet animal legislation.

Darren Campini, Programme Manager for Land and Animal Sciences, said:
“This is a fantastic new education environment for students to learn about the health and welfare of our animals.

“We will be using this to develop students’ practical skills and knowledge that’s required to work in the industry.

“Most of our animals are rescue animals, meaning we get to nurture them and provide a safe place for them to thrive, while giving students a real life working environment for them to progress straight to employment or further study.”
