New research has discovered that over 70% of Brits break their healthy habits over the Christmas period.

Christmas is a time to celebrate. With indulgent food around every corner, the opportunity for a night out almost every day and the nostalgic TV programming making it all too easy to stay on the couch all day, it’s safe to say that it’s the most difficult time of year to be healthy.

To lift the lid on how Brits’ healthy dietary and lifestyle habits change over the Christmas period, TECC conducted a survey of 2,000 nationally representative Brits to find out more.

How many Brits break their diets over the Christmas period?

Whether you follow a certain diet to better your health, or avoid food groups for moral reasons, Christmas can be an extremely testing time with almost HALF of Brits (47%) admitting that they break their diet during the festive season.

The survey uncovered that pescatarians are most likely to cave in December and eat meat. Out of the non-omnivores surveyed, the following were the most likely to break their dietary lifestyle over the Christmas period:
Dietary Lifestyle  Percentage of Brits who would break their dietary lifestyle over the Christmas period  Ranking
Pescatarian 65% 1
Pollotarian (no red meat) 62% 2
Vegetarian  58% 3
Vegan 57% 4

Which habits are Brits excessive with over the Christmas period?

Brits are most excessive with their eating over the Christmas period- with over half admitting to over-indulging over the holiday season. A third of Brits also admitted to watching too much television and drinking too much booze.
Activity  Percentage of Brits that admit to overconsumption over the Christmas period Ranking
Eating  55% 1
Watching Television  37% 2
Alcohol Consumption  34% 3
Spending  30% 4
Break from exercising  29% 5

What are Brits’ smoking habits like over the Christmas period?

Almost one in ten Brits admit to smoking more over the Christmas period, particularly those who are aged between 18 and 24.

Why do Brits break their healthy habits over the Christmas period?

The majority of Brits (71%) admit that they do change their lifestyle habits over the Christmas season.

It turns out that over 2 in 5 Brits change their lifestyle habits the most over Christmas simply because they want to let loose and celebrate the season.

Unfortunately, however, almost 1 in 5 Brits did confess that the stress of Christmas was leading them to indulge in more excessive habits over the holiday season.
Reasons to break healthy habits over Christmas Percentage  Ranking
Celebrating the festive season 41% 1
Want no restrictions during this period 36% 2
Want to fit in with family and friends 26% 3
Feeling stressed around the Christmas period  19% 4

Commenting on the data, CEO of TECC, Marcus Saxton said:
“Christmas is a time to relax and celebrate, so it’s only natural that the majority of Brits let their healthy habits slip - something we’ve probably all been guilty of before! This is clear from the fact that 41% of the survey participants admitted that they break healthy habits because they want to celebrate. There’s no harm in taking some time out of your usual routine to enjoy delicious foods or watch more TV than usual.”

“However, it is important to be mindful to avoid getting too carried away. One in five admitted that they overconsume and pick up unhealthy habits because they feel stressed over the festive period, which is not a healthy habit. Equally, ten percent of those quizzed admitted that they smoke more over Christmas which is not ideal.”

“If you are feeling the pressures of Christmas are leading you to pick up some unhealthy habits you’d rather avoid, try to tackle them with more healthy practices. Take yourself out on a walk if it’s all getting too much or and make sure you take time for yourself, at a time when it can often be difficult to get a moment's peace.”
