Magtec Ignites Engineering Passion In Local Students During National Manufacturing Day
MST schools event
Magtec opened its doors to secondary school students on National Manufacturing Day as part of its efforts to inspire the next generation of engineering talent.
The company welcomed groups from Wales High School, Sheffield Springs Academy and Astra Academy on Thursday, September 26. Magtec hosted the visits with help from WorkWise, an employer-led charity that supports the development of young people so they have the knowledge, skills, aptitude and opportunities for employment within South Yorkshire and beyond.
Speaking afterwards, Andy Sloan, engineering director at Magtec, said:
“It was great to see the young people excited about manufacturing and engineering in general. Local schools and colleges are usually impressed with the students that return from work experience at Magtec and what they learn here.
“One teacher commented that their student was uninterested prior to work experience and returned this year with a renewed zeal and enthusiasm due to what he experienced, which was fantastic feedback.”
Magtec is based at a purpose-built 65,000 sq ft production facility in Rotherham. The company is a leading UK designer, manufacturer and integrator of drive systems for specialist electric and hybrid vehicles. It serves the commercial, rail and defence sectors.
National Manufacturing Day is organised by industry group Make UK to give local communities the chance to see the potential careers and jobs on offer in the sector. Magtec regularly hosts work experience and summer placement students to help promote STEM careers.
