Match Report: York Futsal v Sheffield FC

York Futsal played their first away fixture of the season against Sheffield FC at the English Institute Of Sport on Sunday. After the home win against Cambridge United in the opening match of the season York carried on their excellent form coming out 4-1 winners against a well organised Sheffield team.

Once again wearing their bright pink strip in support of the ‘wear it pink’ breast cancer initiative, York took the lead in the 4th minute through a thunderous toe-poke shot just inside the Sheffield half from new signing Mahamadu Ceesay.

York managed to double their lead in the 18th minute when Fabinho’s long range shot came crashing off the crossbar and fell kindly to Michael Bulmer who tapped the ball into Sheffield’s open goal.

York controlled the game for most of the first half, dominating possession and chances. Indeed, York’s lead should have increased further were it not for some excellent goalkeeping from Mattocks in the Sheffield goal.

Sheffield started the second half with intensity in their play and the pressure almost paid off, but York goalkeeper Myles Chadwick denied them twice in the opening exchanges.

On 22 minutes Daniel Pedras intercepted the ball in his own half before breaking towards the Sheffield goal at speed beating the last defender and slotting the ball past the keeper to make it 3-0 to York.

Sheffield managed to pull one back in the 26th minute from a shot that looked to be covered by the York keeper only for it to find the back of the net.

York’s excellent pressing made it difficult for Sheffield to get a foothold in the match, and helped to create chances for York with Tom Blackburn going close at the back post from a ball fired in from Pedras.

York’s fourth and final goal came from captain Fabinho in the 29th minute, the ball rolled in perfectly by Blackburn from a kick in on the right side was finished off with a powerful strike into the roof of the Sheffield goal. An entertaining match to watch with the score line reflecting both team’s performances.

Head Coach Junior Roberti had this to say afterwards:
‘It’s been a great start for us in the National Futsal League, but we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves. We have to continue to work hard in training and be ready to continue our form for our fans at our next game against Birmingham Tigers at the York Sport Arena on the 3rd of November. ‘
