The York ME Community would like to wish marathon runner Mike Harley the best of luck as he heads off to run the Barcelona Marathon next weekend (Sunday March 12th) to raise money for research to find a cure for ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis).

Bill Clayton who founded the York ME Community has been working with Mike for the last two years, to raise awareness and funds for clinical trials and treatments to help ME patients across Yorkshire and beyond.

In that time, Mike has run a marathon in 9 different countries in the EU; he aims to run a race in all 28 member states, finishing the challenge in 2020.

Mike's friend Ian has had ME for over 10 years and has been unable to work or lead a normal life through chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pains, severe headaches and brain fog, amongst other symptoms.

Over 250,000 people in the UK including 25,000 children suffer with the condition, which can leave them house and bed-bound for many years.

Mike and Bill are raising money for a volunteer run charity called Invest In ME (www.investinme.org) who have funded the PhD's of 5 students who are working with scientists to find a cure.

The charity are organising clinical trials of promising new drugs and setting up a centre of excellence, where research and treatments can be found. They feel that major progress is being made in understanding the illness and finding causes and treatments and represents the best chance for anyone who has the illness in finding a cure.

Mike is aiming to raise £26.2K in total and in each country he visits he'll be meeting with ME charities and patients to try and raise awareness by telling their stories.

Mike has been in touch with MillonesAusentes (a Spanish ME charity) and is hoping to make contact with scientists and researchers from Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Valencia Catholic University, Saint Vincent Martyr and IrsiCaixa, as well as meeting patients before the race.
