The rail industry has launched a new competition to appoint three ‘Chief Environment Officers’. Each ‘CEO’ will win a £10,000 prize to trial beautiful routes across the country and uncover the green credentials of some of Britain’s best locations.

New research conducted by Rail Delivery Group reveals that almost half of Brits (46%) are unaware that travelling by train is the most sustainable form of transport, with one in ten believing that cars (13%) or planes (13%) are better for the environment.

Explorer and broadcaster Simon Reeve has thrown his support behind the rail industry’s campaign, championing sustainable travel and revealing some of his favourite destinations that are accessible by rail across Britain.

Simon Reeve comments:
“Choosing to travel by train instead of driving cuts carbon emissions by two thirds, making it a better choice for the environment. Rail can connect you to lots of fantastic destinations across Britain, from Buxton in the Peak District to Oakhampton in Devon.”

Demand for sustainable travel is on the rise

With half of Brits (51%) planning to take a longer holiday in the UK this year, most of us are looking for relaxation (60%) switching off (46%) and spending time with family (43%). But alongside these considerations, environmental sustainability is also important to 59% of Brits when they book a holiday, rising to 66% amongst 18-34 year olds.

How to become a rail industry CEO

This competition to become one of the rail industry’s champions of sustainable travel runs from World Earth Day (22nd April) until midnight on 1st May at nationalrail.co.uk/CEO. Each applicant must submit a 60-second video bringing to life a recent trip, explaining why they should win and, most importantly, sharing why they care about sustainability. The three winners will be determined by a judging panel including Simon Reeve and travel vloggers Chloe Wanderlust and An Adventurous World.

Jacqueline Starr, CEO of the Rail Delivery Group comments:
“Many of us are increasingly concerned about our personal impact on the environment, and what we can do to lessen it. We hope that our newly appointed Chief Environment Officers show people how easy it is to make greener journeys by train and uncover some of the fantastic opportunities travelling by train opens up.”

The Great British Rail Sale

Eager CEO applicants looking to hone their reviewing skills can get a head start by booking a sustainable trip for less as part of the Great British Rail Sale . With up to 50% off select Advance tickets on over 1 million journeys until 2nd May, customers are encouraged to book the Great British Rail Sale tickets early, as once they’re gone, they’re gone.
