The start of 2025 has already given us a new PDC World Champion and the continuation of battles in the relegation and promotion races in all top four football leagues and beyond.

This week, the dramatic action continues (snow permitting!); with a semi-final and Yorkshire derby along the way, there is plenty to get stuck into.

Tuesday 7th January: Wycombe v Huddersfield, 19:45pm

Action from the top of League One this week involves Yorkshire side Huddersfield Town, who are fighting for a playoff spot, or better, taking on an excelling Wycombe Wanderers side looking to further their title challenge.

The Terriers are safely in the playoffs in 4th place on 44 points, six points ahead of Stockport in 7th. A challenge for automatic promotion is not out of reach at this point, and a win versus promotion rivals Wycombe, would help to increase their chances.

Completing that task will be easier said than done though. Matt Bloomfield’s Wycombe team have exceeded expectations and look to be taking favourites Birmingham all the way and emulating the promotion that was achieved by Chairboys legend Gareth Ainsworth in 2020.

Both sides come into this one following drawn matches at the weekend. Huddersfield are now 14 league games unbeaten, albeit they have drawn too may matches of late. Wycombe have stuttered a little too, and saw out 2024 with a third loss of the season against Charlton.

The faltering has not done much to deter Wycombe, and they still look the best placed to upset the financial powerhouse of the Blues. But as we saw last week with Barnsley’s 2-1 win against Wrexham, the sides in the playoffs can turn it on against the automatic promotion challengers.

Date: 07/01/2025
Time: 19.45pm
Venue: Adams Park, Wycombe

Wednesday 8th January: Tottenham v Liverpool - EFL Cup semi-final, 20:00pm

We are down to the last four in the EFL Cup and things are heating up in the search for the first piece of silverware available in 2025. For these two teams, their Premier League performances have been night and day. Liverpool remain top of the league in Arne Slot’s first season at Anfield. For Postecoglou’s Spurs, their league form has been patchy at best.

The Lilywhites are without a win in four matches, most recently suffering a 2-1 home loss to Newcastle. This inconsistency has led them to 12th place in the table, and now sitting eleven points away from European qualification, this could mean the importance of the EFL Cup is emphasised, with a win of the competition being potentially their only hope of a spot in continental football next season.

The EFL cup has been a welcome reprieve for Spurs, showing their pedigree against both Manchester United and City on route to this semifinal. They have had a much harder drawer compared to their scouse opponents who beat Brighton and West Ham prior to this meeting.

Liverpool have been close to perfection this season. Just one loss in the league to Nottingham Forest in September has meant the red half of Merseyside boast a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Date: 08/01/2025
Time: 20.00pm
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London

The match will be shown on NOW TV , Sky Go Extra , Sky Go ,Sky Sports Football ,Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports+ ,Sky Ultra

Thursday 9th January: Sheffield United v Cardiff - FA Cup Third Round, 19:00pm

Two teams from opposing ends of the Championship enter the FA Cup against each other this Thursday, with Chris Wilder’s blistering blades take on Omer Riza’s bereft Bluebirds at Bramhall Lane.

Sheffield United have remained steadfast in the chasing pack hunting down the Championship title this season. Alongside Burnley and Leeds, the Blades have cemented themselves as one of the best of the second tier. After a run of three games without a win, Wilder’s men got an all-important 2-1 win versus Watford on Saturday, meaning they sit just one spot off current leaders Leeds.

Cardiff will be hoping a positive run in the cup could bolster the mood around the Cardiff City Stadium. Firmly sat in the relegation zone in 23rd spot, the Bluebirds have just one win from twelve, but following a positive 1-1 draw away at Middlesbrough at the weekend, the tide could be showing flickers of change. However, Cardiff have only managed one win from their last seven against the blades, with their last win coming all the way back in 2017.

If the past and indeed the present are anything to go by, the odds do point towards a Sheffield United victory.

Friday 10th January: Ossett United v Bridlington Town, 19:45pm

The Pitching In Northern Premier League East is accustomed to a Yorkshire derby and this week is no different. This time it is West v East as Ossett host seasiders Bridlington at the Ingfield Stadium.

Ossett have faired the better of the two thus far in the league, which is not saying much considering the West Yorkshire natives are in 18th position and just two points above the visitors in 21st. Nevertheless, there is a potential dramatic affair on the cards and one which could have drastic permutations come the end of the season.

Only Sheffield FC find themselves somewhat adrift as they are rock bottom by five points. However, the East Division relegation zone is no stagnant water, and both Bridlington and Ossett are in the fight against the tide. The hosts are only one point off the drop zone and two points from the visitors, meaning a win in this for either side, could result in an escape out of the relegation zone for at least another match week.
