Sport: What's On This Weekend?

As the days become shorter and the weather gets colder, the sporting calendar never rests. Despite club football being put on hold for the last international break of the year, we still have lots of football to feast on in the lower leagues, as well as other sporting events taking place in the local area.

So sports fans, with the national side playing on Sunday, why not head down to one of the following fixtures taking place in Yorkshire to either fill that football fix we all crave, or just plain and simple, to keep yourself busy during the weekend.

Saturday 16th November: Harrogate Town AFC vs Chesterfield FC

Chesterfield make the short trip up the A1 this week to face Harrogate Town who are winless in their last four league games. The Town will be keen to prove their slow start to the season is not a sign of things to come and will surely be hoping to claim all three points against what will be tough opposition.

The Sulphurites are currently sitting 20th, and despite a recent big win in the FA Cup against League One highflyers Wrexham, the Yorkshire outfit will be licking their wounds from Tuesday night as they bowed out of the EFL Trophy on penalties to Blackpool.

Harrogate Town need to turn the tide on their league season and this could be the perfect time to do just that. So why not grab your big coat, put on your woolly hat and head down to support a local Yorkshire team with a friendly fanbase who will be happy to have you.

Date: Saturday 16th November
Kick Off: 15:00
Location: The Exercise Stadium, Wetherby Road, Harrogate, HG2 7SG

Currently placed 3rd in the National Ice Hockey League and winning every fixture so far in November, Leeds Knights are a thrill to watch and one thing is for sure, those who are yet to experience live Ice Hockey are missing out.

This weekend, Leeds Knights face Berkshire Bees who are struggling for form at the moment, so the home side will be hoping for a convincing win to continue their 100% record in November and help carry on their push to take top spot.

Sunday 17th November: Sheffield United Women vs Sunderland AFC Women

Turning our attention to the women's game, and The Blades welcome Sunderland to Bramall Lane as the two sides face off against each other, separated by one place in the Barclays Women's Championship.

Sunderland, nicknamed ‘The Lasses’, are coming to the Steel City on the back of three strong wins, and despite being nine points clear of Sheffield United, they sit next to each other in the table. The Blades come into this game on the back of an away point against Portsmouth who sit rock bottom of the table having claimed their first point of the season against Sheffield United.

On paper, the Yorkshire based team seem set for an uphill battle against Sunderland, but the last time these two sides faced each other at Bramall Lane back at the beginning of October, it took a late winner from Emily Grace Cassap to separate the two sides.

Sheffield United will be keen to turn improved performances into points and claim their second win of the season this Sunday, but it will not be easy as the visitors will be coming with full intentions of taking all three points back to the north east, to help their charge up the table.

Date: Sunday 17th November
Kick Off: 13:00
Location: Bramall Lane, Bramall Ln, Highfield, Sheffield S2 4SU

Game of the weekend – Sunday 17th November: England vs Ireland

The Three Lions are back in action this week in the Nations League as Lee Carsley takes charge of his final game as Caretaker manager before Thomas Tuchel takes charge on January 1st 2025. The national side face Ireland in what is always a feisty affair between two countries where the history goes a lot deeper than football.

History becomes key in this fixture as England Caretaker boss Carsley is a former Ireland international. England players Declan Rice and Jack Grealish seemed to steal the headlines the last time these two sides met, as they both represented Ireland at academy level before making the switch to represent England. They have, however, both withdrawn from the squad alongside Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and other key players.

Both England and Ireland are playing for points as well as pride. England are aiming to secure promotion into the Nations League A, whilst Ireland are looking to avoid relegation from the division. This game, as always, is one that you are not going to want to miss.

Date: Sunday 17th November
Kick Off: 17:00
Location: Wembley Stadium, South Way Wembley, London HA9 0WS
