Steps - What The Future Holds (BMG Records)

Rather than be left to go on the nostalgia circuit Steps are still recording and, when the time allows, still touring.

A lot of people do not seem to understand what the appeal of the five piece is. To understand the attraction of the group you really need to go to one of their concerts to see the rapport between them and their fans.

Really, though what they do best is record out and out pop songs much like Kylie does.

For the uninitiated listening to the new album all in one go might seem like eating a whole box of chocolates in one go, yes it is very sugary but satisfying nevertheless.

The title track of the album starts things off, an Abba by numbers track it could be the cousin to Summer Night City: a pulsating disco beat with a modern 2020 twist is all it takes to begin lift off.

Something In Your Eyes continues with the Abba influence; it makes you wonder why Steps have never represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest. Things began to down the Kylie path with To The Beat Of My Heart.

Under My Skin slows down the tempo with the track sounding more at home on a Little Mix album, in fact you would not guess this was Steps.

The disco ball is shining and spinning again on To The One. If the clubs were open you can bet that they would be playing this track. Things end with Hold My Heart - a strong ballad to finish off an album that is unashamed pure pop.

2020 has been a year that we all would like to forget, but in the darkness of it all, albums such as this can’t help put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.

I rate the album 3 out of 5
