New data reveals the most desirable engagement rings in the UK.

The research, conducted by Ramsdens Jewellery, examined online search data for a list of key terms relating to engagement rings. This included both the stone and cut, such as diamond and princess cut. Those with the highest average monthly search volume between July 2023 and June 2024 have been named the most popular in the UK.

Emerald engagement rings take the crown, with an average monthly search volume of 6,801. Recognisable for their bright, vivid shade of green, emeralds represent the growth and new beginnings associated with marriage. They’re also one of the rarest gemstones in the world and are often more expensive than diamonds.

Diamond engagement rings come in second place, with 5,862 average monthly searches in the UK. Classic and elegant, diamonds have been a popular engagement gemstone since the mid-1900s. Due to their reputation as the toughest natural mineral on earth, diamond engagement rings represent an unbreakable bond between newlyweds.

According to the study, sapphire engagement rings have an average monthly search volume of 4,902, placing them in third. Despite coming in a range of colours – including, but not limited to, pink, green, and yellow – sapphires are typically a striking shade of royal blue. The gemstone symbolises the faith and loyalty that create a long-lasting marriage.

In the UK, ruby engagement rings rank in fourth place, with an average monthly search volume of 1,881. Rubies are recognisable for their bold, dramatic shade of crimson red. Due to this fiery colour, the gemstone represents the passion and devotion between romantic couples.

According to the study, opal engagement rings are the fifth most sought-after in the UK, with 1,853 searches per month on average. Opals come in a range of ethereal colours and patterns. With rainbow hues that shimmer in the light, they represent luck and happiness that comes with a lasting marriage.

Yellow diamond engagement rings – a bright, sunny gemstone that stands out from traditional white diamonds – rank in sixth. In the UK, people are searching for this style of engagement ring 1,428 times per month. Due to their inviting bright hue, yellow gemstones symbolise love and happiness, making them among the most popular.

In seventh place, black diamonds have an average monthly search volume of 1,260. An extremely rare gemstone, black diamonds radiate power and elegance. Their deep and intense colour is often associated with strength, representing a solid union between newlyweds in the years to come.

Amethysts, with 968 average monthly searches, rank in eighth place. Pink diamonds follow in ninth, with an average monthly search volume of 827. Morganite is the tenth most desirable engagement ring gemstone in the UK, with 757 average monthly searches, according to the study.

Additionally, the data also analysed the most popular engagement ring cuts in the U.K. The most popular style is an emerald cut, with 4,013 average monthly searches. Sleek and timeless, emerald cut engagement rings have step-cut facets that showcase the gemstone’s clarity and depth. Beyoncé, Paris Hilton, and Anne Hathaway are three notable celebrities who have worn emerald cut engagement rings.

According to the study, princess cut engagement rings are the second most popular in the UK, with an average monthly search volume of 2,092. Famously worn by Hilary Duff, princess cut engagement rings are classic, refined, and characterised by their clean-cut, angular edges.

Pear cut engagement rings are the third most desirable cut in the UK, with 1,246 average monthly searches. Also known as teardrop engagement rings, this style has been adored by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Elizabeth Taylor, and Cardi B.

In fourth place, with 1,145 average monthly searches, are round brilliant engagement rings. Delicate and shimmering, the round brilliant style reflects more light than any other cut. Many celebrities, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Ciara, adore the style.

Next, with an average monthly search volume of 1,009, is the radiant cut engagement ring. Previously worn by Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez, a radiant cut engagement ring is rectangular, like an emerald cut, but with the brilliance of a round cut, which shimmers and reflects light from multiple angles.

Oval cut engagement rings are the sixth most popular in the UK, with 902 average monthly searches. A favourite among celebrities, the style can be seen on public figures in the past and present, such as Princess Diana, Serena Williams and Kourtney Kardashian.

In seventh place, cushion cut engagement rings have 875 average monthly searches. While similar to a princess cut, cushion cut engagement rings have rounder edges that exude sophistication and luxury. Meghan Markle, Zoë Kravitz, and Karlie Kloss are three well-known celebrities who said “yes” to the style.

Heart cut, with 398 average monthly searches, comes in eighth place, followed by marquise cut in ninth, with an average monthly search volume of 309. Asscher cut ranks as the tenth most sought-after engagement cut, with 185 average monthly searches.

A spokesperson for Ramsdens Jewellery has commented on the findings:
“Engagement rings embody the love and commitment of every union. While symbolic, rings are also a valuable addition to anyone’s jewellery collection and can be designed to fit the unique style of each wearer, whether they prefer classic diamonds or unique heart-shaped cuts. This study has highlighted the most desirable styles in the UK, highlighting that emeralds and emerald cuts take the crown, suggesting a rise in popularity for these styles. As such, hopeful fiancés can keep these results in mind when they choose an engagement ring, considering whether they would like to shop with the latest fashion trends in mind or choose a style that strays away from the masses.”
