Swedish Delight – Volvo’s Family Friendly XC90 On Test

The Volvo XC90 B5 Mild Hybrid continues to impress as a luxurious and capable three-row SUV, even as it enters its tenth year since the last full redesign.

This venerable model showcases Volvo's strengths in craftsmanship, safety, and technology while offering a comfortable and efficient driving experience.

Powertrain and Performance

The B5 powertrain features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 250hp.

This setup provides a balance of performance and efficiency, with smooth power delivery and improved fuel economy compared to non-hybrid variants. The eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive ensure capable performance in various driving conditions.

While not as quick as its more powerful T8 sibling, the B5 still offers adequate acceleration for daily driving. The mild hybrid system contributes to a refined driving experience, with seamless start-stop functionality and subtle electric assistance during acceleration.

Ride and Handling

The XC90 B5 delivers a composed and comfortable ride, particularly when equipped with the optional air suspension. It handles most road imperfections with grace, providing a serene cabin environment for passengers. The steering is accurate and well-weighted, striking a balance between ease of use and driver engagement.

In corners, the XC90 exhibits some body lean, which is typical for a vehicle of its size and class. However, it remains controlled and predictable, inspiring confidence in the driver. The B5 variant, being lighter than the plug-in hybrid models, does perhaps offer slightly more agile handling characteristics.

b>Interior and Technology

Volvo's reputation for exceptional interior design is well-represented in the current XC90. The cabin exudes elegance with high-quality materials, including beautiful open-pore wood trim, soft leather, and tasteful brightwork.

The minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic is both visually appealing and functional. The XC90 offers spacious seating in the first two rows, though the third row is best suited for children or shorter adults.

Cargo space is generous, especially with the rear seats folded, making the XC90 a versatile choice for families and those who need to haul larger items. Volvo's infotainment system, based on Google technology, provides helpful features and is generally user-friendly.

However, some functions can be difficult to access while driving due to the reliance on touchscreen controls. The lack of physical buttons for certain functions may be a drawback for some drivers.

Safety and Driver Assistance

True to Volvo's heritage, the XC90 B5 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features and driver assistance technologies. The adaptive cruise control system is particularly noteworthy, offering smooth operation and consistent performance.

Lane-keeping assistance and other active safety features contribute to a secure driving experience.

Efficiency and Value

The B5 mild hybrid system helps improve fuel efficiency without the complexity and cost associated with plug-in hybrid models. Up to 33mpg is possible say the figures, but in the real world, I would suggest 25+ would be more accurate. Emissions are high too at 208g/km CO2 for my top spec ‘Ultra’ test car.

In terms of value, the XC90 B5 offers a compelling package of luxury, technology, and practicality. The Core trim level, while lacking some of the more premium features of higher trims, still provides a well-equipped base model that should satisfy most buyers and can be had from £61,670. Add almost £14,000 for the top model.

Business users will of course be drawn to the T8 Plug-In models (priced from £71,405) due to their low CO2 emissions of just 29g/km and BIK of 8%.

Conclusion

The Volvo XC90 B5 Mild Hybrid remains a strong contender in the luxury three-row SUV segment. Its combination of elegant design, comfortable interior, advanced safety features, and efficient powertrain make it an attractive option for families and luxury SUV buyers alike.

While it may not be the sportiest or most cutting-edge offering in its class, the XC90 B5 excels in delivering a refined, practical, and safe driving experience. As the automotive industry continues to evolve towards electrification, the XC90's mild hybrid system represents a transitional step, offering improved efficiency without the range anxiety or charging requirements of fully electric vehicles. For those seeking a well-rounded luxury SUV with Volvo's renowned safety credentials and Scandinavian design ethos, the XC90 B5 Mild Hybrid is certainly worth consideration.
