The Kirkwood Receives Funding For Community Nursing

The Kirkwood have been awarded a grant from the Haley Family Charitable Trust to provide additional care and support to those in Cleckheaton facing a life limiting illness. The three-year grant will provide funding for a second Kirkwood Nurse in the Cleckheaton area, ensuring patients and families can receive the best quality care at home.

A long-time supporter of The Kirkwood, the Haley Family Charitable Trust has funded many projects over the years. A family business and manufacturer of Card Clothing, S. Haley & Son Ltd, thrived in Cleckheaton in the early 1900s and since has had an affectionate interest in the Spen Valley area, giving something back to the community where it all began for generations old and new.

The addition of an extra Kirkwood Nurse within Cleckheaton will make a meaningful impact to those living in the area, helping to deliver the very best quality of care for people in their own homes, supporting individuals with a range of conditions, including cancer.

Ian Pattison, Trustee for the Trust, said:
“We are keen to turn the clock back in a way that is relevant in 2020, making a difference to the town where the family business prospered. Care at home in something incredibly important to those facing life limiting illnesses, but not something always easily accessible. With two Kirkwood Nurses now in Cleckheaton, who are dedicated to those individuals and their families, no one will face a life limiting illness alone.”

For those supported by a Kirkwood Nurse, the impact can be life changing. The work of The Kirkwood’s Nurses is to deliver essential advice and support to ensure the patient can access the right services, at the right time, to maintain quality of life and keep them active for as long as possible. Not only do the nurses provide clinical care and medication to control symptoms and pain, they help families navigate the care system to be able to access the equipment and social care needed to support the patient through this time. The nurses also have a vital role to play in facilitating referral to The Kirkwood’s In-Patient Unit should it become necessary for end of life care.

Michael Crowther, Chief Executive with The Kirkwood, added:
“Many of our patients, whether they are facing cancer, a heart condition, or any other life limiting illness, want to be cared for in their own homes for as long as possible. Specialist palliative care and support from The Kirkwood’s Nurses makes this wish come true for local people, giving essential care at home through an individual’s journey and at the end of their life.

“Where the misconception lies, is that many people in our care believe it is Macmillan Nurses who are caring for them, when in fact throughout Kirklees it is The Kirkwood’s Nurses who provide this service and support the patient and family at this time.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Haley Family Charitable Trust for this grant and their ongoing support. Anyone in Cleckheaton with a life limiting illness will be supported to receive the best possible care at home.”
