The Psychedelic Furs - Made Of Rain (Cooking Vinyl)
The Psychedelic Furs for many will be best known to many for their hit Pretty In Pink
which was eventually re recorded to become the theme song to the film of the same name. For many of their original fans it was like they had sold out at the time, though the song did make the band known to a mainstream audience.
Now nearly over 30 years later the band are back and to be honest, it’s like they had never been away. Lead singer Richard Butler still sounds like David Bowie, the songs are as full blown as ever but rather than resting on their laurels this new album reminds you why you liked them in the first place.
If you are a fan you will have had a long wait for this new album - their last album was released in 1991.
Of course the musical landscape seems it is like it is from another planet in 2020 from 1981 but as Butler sings on This’ll Never Be Like Love,
this is “a road that never ends” a delicate ballad that comes nearly half way through the album.
, a mid paced song could be no one else but The Psychedelic Furs, Butlers distinctive vocals ride over the top of a guitar driven song. It is said that R.E.M. were influenced by the band, you can hear that on Tiny Hands
which is a track that R.E.M. would I am sure be proud to sing.
On Hide The Medicine
again is another song that could only be a Psychedelic Furs song but really it is the songs at the start of the album that are up there with their best numbers. The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll
along with Don’t Believe
have melodies that will stick in your head all day.
Has it been worth the 29 year wait for this new album? Certainly, play the album loud, the band stand tall and proud.
I rate the album 4 out of 5 and comes out Friday 31 July
