Festive football has arrived, and Yorkshire teams are one step closer to wrapping things up for 2024.

Leeds United gave their fans an early gift ahead of Christmas when they beat Oxford United 4-0 at Elland Road on Saturday. An early goal from Daniel James in the 9th minute and three others in the second half secured Leeds three important points in their title race.

Middlesborough faced Plymouth Argyle away and split the points with The Pilgrims. A tough game in southwest England saw The Boro side equalise on three occasions to secure a 3-3 result at Home Park. Jonathan Howson, Hayden Hackney and Latte Lath were the players who managed to get on the scoresheet to ensure they didn’t make the long trip home, empty-handed.

Hull City welcomed Swansea at the MKM Stadium for their match in round 22 of the Championship. Joao Pedro Galvao and Mason Burstow secured three much needed points for The Tigers, defeating their guests from Wales, 2-1.
Sheffield Wednesday took on Stoke City at home, and despite Di’Shon Bernard’s red card in the 41st minute, Wednesday remained the stronger side, scoring twice in the second half to win the game by two goals to nil. Callum Patterson sealed the win in the 76th minute after Josh Windass’ opener in the 52nd minute.

Rivals Sheffield United had a worthwhile trip to Cardiff as they won 2-0 against The Bluebirds. Kieffer Moore grabbed the brace to win United all three points and keep the Blades sitting top of the Championship table.

In League One, a very disappointing performance this weekend by Barnsley, saw them lose 4-0 at home to Leyton Orient. The Tykes have now failed to win at home in the league since 8th November. Improvements required in the new year.

Huddersfield Town maintained their great form and were victorious 4-0 away to Cambridge United, on Friday night, under the lights.
David Kasumu, who is bang in form, opened the scoring in the 12th minute, followed by Brodie Spencer’s second strike in two games coming midway through the first half. Northern Ireland teammate, Callum Marshall, continued his recent good scoring form, with two goals in the second half, to make it a comfortable evening for the West Yorkshire side.

Mansfield Town put an end to Rotherham’s three-win streak (in all competitions) as The Millers lost 1-0 in Nottinghamshire. Rotherham are now in 18th place in League One, and have a huge game on boxing day at home to Wigan Athletic, who are just one place and one point ahead of them in the table.

In League Two, Bradford City fans were left disappointed after The Bantams were defeated 3-0 by Notts County at Meadow Lane. Alassana Jatta (x2) and David McGoldrick scored for the hosts, keeping Bradford in mid-table.

At the Exercise Stadium, Harrogate Town welcomed Walsall for a game that did not end in favour of The Sulphurites, losing 2-0. Harrogate’s Josh March received a red card in the 38th minute, which was the last thing they needed against the runaway leaders.
From their final fixture ahead of Christmas, Doncaster Rovers took all three points versus Tranmere Rovers. A 3-1 victory keeps them in the promotion hunt, with a mouth-watering fixture on Boxing Day next up, when they travel to aforementioned League Two leaders, Walsall.

In the National League, York City put on another great display, this time against Southend United, winning 3-0. All the goals came from corners in the second half and secured pole position for York City in the table.
