Turtle Bay Delivers A Taste Of The Caribbean In Leeds

After another consecutive wet and windy weekend, walking into Turtle Bay in the centre of Leeds felt like summer had arrived.

The décor has a Caribbean theme and is mainly in the Jamaican colours of red, green and yellow with the music to match; by the time I had left I knew the words to every Bob Marley hit.

Our fellow diners were mainly on the right side of 30, the big draw was the 2 for 1 cocktails which are served until 7pm and after 10pm. The food didn’t seem to be the main draw which could be loved, as Bob Marley is apt to sing.

The menu ranges from curries, burgers and Rotis to fish fry and fried chicken with 2 courses from a set menu for £12.00 or 3 courses for £15.00 - Sunday to Thursday.

You might have to wait a while for your drinks to arrive as they come from the bar, which seemed to be very busy, no doubt from the 2 for 1 cocktails.

From the main menu we chose the Garlic Flatbread which seemed very pricey at £5.50 (all starters are this price). The chilli butter took away any taste of garlic and seemed a bit too hot. Things though improved after this.

The vegan dishes are plentiful on the menu – my sister decided on the No Moo Burger – a beef style patty served with a delicious onion relish, jerk mayo and hot sauce. It looked like a meat burger and priced at £7.50 it seemed reasonable.

The Trini Curry Chicken I tried was hotter than a summers day in Kingston in Jamaica, served medium heat, coconut and mango spiced sauce with whole curried chicken breast and coconut rice and peas, it more than made up for the disappointing Garlic Flatbread. Just as good as any Bradford curry. Fries are extra on both meals and are priced at £3.00.

If you fancy a very robust Sticky Ginger Pudding then you are in luck – they serve one with vanilla ice cream on the side for £5.00. Other puddings are Banana Toffee Cheesecake and Rum and Raisin Pudding to name a couple.

Service throughout was attentive, quick and friendly. I noticed that this was transparent with every customer.

As Mr Marley sang, Stir It Up, Turtle Bay certainly did.
