Bacon butties that will never be eaten, are coming to the rescue of North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) as it battles to beat the financial hardship caused by the nationwide Coronavirus scare.

The Pickering based attraction has expanded its online shop to include a virtual store, which not only includes an option to purchase a virtual journey along the stunning heritage line, but also virtual cuppas and bacon butties, all for enjoyment whilst self-isolating on the sofa!

But there is a serious side to what at first viewing might seem like a money making stunt.

The virtual purchases have been launched in aid of the charity’s ongoing crisis appeal, which was launched recently to keep one of the UK’s favourite heritage railways on track to reopen later this year, after previously confirming it had delayed its season opening until further notice because of Covid-19.

After making their purchase, customers will be taken to a unique page where they will receive a link to a video experience of the line. They can also rest assured that 100% of their donation will go directly to helping secure a future for the attraction.

Chris Price, General Manager at NYMR, said: “Every item in our virtual store represents a similar product or service which supports the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. I can’t stress how much each and every gift purchased will massively help support the railway, and all donations made will make a really big difference to us here on the ground.

“These are undoubtedly really difficult times, and we’re asking for a fighting chance to keep going. As the situation currently stands, monetary aid hasn’t been offered to charities and with the potential for us to lose up to £1 million over the upcoming weeks, every penny people can spare will be gratefully received.

“Besides, this is probably the only bacon butty you can buy that won’t add on the calories!”
