Yorkshire Charity Breaks New Official Guinness World Records® Title By ‘Giving It Some Welly’

Yorkshire Cancer Research, the region’s leading cancer charity, is the new record holder for the Most videos of people throwing wellington boots uploaded in one hour on Facebook
The charity hosted the world’s biggest virtual welly wang on Yorkshire Day to help raise funds to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer

Yorkshire Cancer Research set a new world record for the Most videos of people throwing wellington boots uploaded in one hour on Facebook on Yorkshire Day (1st August) in a bid to help raise funds to save more lives in Yorkshire.

The world record took place as part of the charity’s annual fundraising campaign, ‘Give It Some Welly’, which was launched in July to raise vital funds to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the region.

The charity, which encouraged people across the region to take part in the ‘world’s biggest virtual welly wang’, saw 255 participants filming themselves wanging their wellies, and uploading their footage on Facebook between 2-3pm on Saturday, Yorkshire Day.

To be part of this world record, participants were asked to make a donation for every welly they wanged to help the charity reach its goal of raising £10m this year, so more people in Yorkshire can ‘give cancer the boot’ for good.

The virtual event was supported by two live events in Eldwick, near Bingley and Leeds. Leeds Kirkgate Market asked its traders and customers to join in their own welly wanging event in their outdoor market area, while residents in Eldwick held their annual Welly Fest to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Dr Kathryn Scott, chief executive at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said:
“We are so pleased that Yorkshire is in the spotlight with a new world record. On behalf of the entire charity, I’d like to say a massive thank you to every single person who joined our ‘Give it Some Welly’ campaign and helped us achieve this record - without them none of this would have been possible.

“We have seen people in Yorkshire come together to help more people give cancer the boot for good; their generosity has been incredible. People affected by cancer have found the past few months incredibly challenging, so we wanted this world record to help us raise life-changing funds to minimise the impact of the pandemic on people with cancer in our region.

“With our ambitious target to fund £10 million of world leading research every year to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, people in Yorkshire can still help more people give cancer the boot for good by making a donation on our website.”
