Album Review: Dua Lipa - The Debut Album (Warner Bros)

One of most eagerly awaited albums of the year has been the debut album from Dua Lipa. There have been the singles so far and they have been some of the best pop tracks of the last 18 months.

When you could not differentiate between one female singer and another and they all sounded the same, you could always count on Dua Lipa to stand out from the others.

The album starts off in a subdued mood with Genesis, but it soon picks up with Lost in Your Light, a track she has performed with Miguel, the song is typical of her sound, a delightful pop track that is melodic but does not sound like everyone else.

Hotter Than Hell was one of my favourite pop tracks of last year: cheeky, self assured yet utterly charming. Be The One was another one that is instantly memorable and also a single. Ditto the brilliant, Blow Your Mind (Mwah).

Her voice at times reminds me of Amy Winehouse, especially on the ballad Garden. She seems to concentrate on songs that have big choruses, Begging is typical of that.

Dreams could be the next single, a pulsating track that has been written with arena shows in mind. Room For 2 is a steamy ballad that hits the bullseye.

Probably one of the best debut pop albums of the year. If she is not nominated for a BRIT award next February it would be grossly unfair.

I rate the album 4 out of 5.
