Album Review: James Arthur - Back From The Edge
James Arthur's story is well documented as to how he won the X Factor and then seemed to fall into bad times with his lifestyle. Many thought his career was over but he has always had a strong fan base, who have been older than the young teens who usually vote for the X Factor winner. His gigs are usually attended by anyone aged 20 upwards.
Now back in the same fold as most of the other X Factor winners he has returned with this accomplished album. The title track has a lyric all about his past demons, as he sings "Back from the edge, back from the dead, back before the demons took control of my head". He is not just simply singing the words, he feels what he is singing because he has lived through what he is singing and he also co-written the song.
The first single from the album has already been a Number 1 on the singles chart: Say You Won't Let Go which reminds me of an Ed Sheeran song. Prisoner follows, again it's another track about his recent past. "I'm a hazard to myself " he sings. The music is quite uplifting and you can imagine the track being a good song to sing live.
I Am has a vocal that could be Yorkshire's own John Newman but it's back to his recent woes on the track Train Wreck, a fine ballad with a soulful vocal. Sober has a great chorus and you feel glad that he has come through his recent problems and has made this great album.
It sounds like he will be around for many years to come yet.
