All Singing And All Dancing!
Victoria Benn, Features Writer
The Swing Kids
Yorkshire Vintage Fairs are clearly working hard at developing their take on the vintage fair concept, adding a day-long live vocalist to their events and most laterally, the wonderful spectacle of swing dancing. Saturday’s fair in Harrogate was certainly no exception as The Swing Kids – Tom Powell and Catriona Burniston – dressed nautical but nice, not only took to the pulpit to showcase their moves, but also braved the rain to host a swing dance ‘social’ with fellow swing dancers out on the front terrace of the Wesley Centre.

Passers-by seemed delighted with the afternoon long show, and some brave folk even tried out a few moves.

Stepping inside the Wesley, the party atmosphere didn’t dilute as The Fabulous Miss G – Dani Gallagher – set the tone with her rich vocals, singing classics from the likes of Etta James, Dinah Washington and Nancy Sinatra.

Dressed to impress
The fair itself consisted of two floors and over 20 sellers boasting a colourful and eclectic assortment of fashion, accessories and household items from the 1900s to the 1980s. Edwardian riding habits shared the space with cool colourful mid-century wares, ensuring there was something for every taste and inclination.

Said organiser Claire Walton: “We’re really passionate about ensuring that we put together not just a fair, but an event – and all the lovely feedback we’ve received today confirms that we managed to do just that.”

Swing dance social
A beautiful and imposing building built in 1862, Harrogate’s Wesley Centre is not only a town centre Methodist church but also a multi-purpose space which hosts a wide range of concerts and events, not least the bi-annual Harrogate Vintage Fair.
