Designs By Sheffield Students Are Unveiled On City’s Gritters
Creative designs by three students from Sheffield were unveiled on the Streets Ahead gritters today by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Anne Murphy.

Just in time for the winter season, the three designs, which include a snowy scene of Sheffield, will be seen on the vehicles as they travel on the city’s roads this winter.

As part of a competition run by Streets Ahead, students from infant schools, primary schools and colleges were asked to showcase their artistic talents by creating wintry designs for the gritters named The Bear, Snowy Steve & Steel city gritter.

The students with the winning designs attended the unveiling alongside parents and teachers who were the first to see the artwork emblazoned on the side of the vehicles.

Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Bryan Lodge, who also attended the event, said:

“It was fantastic to see the new designs on the side of the gritters and to thank the winning students for their inventive creations.

“The competition was a great way for the team at Streets Ahead to work with local schools and colleges and give our gritters a fresh look.

“All the designs submitted were of a high standard and the winning students are really excited to see their very own artwork on the move across Sheffield in coming months.”

The winning designs were submitted by UTC student, Kirstie Dale, Hallam Primary School student, Arvin Hamidi and Pye Bank School student, Nabil Abubaker.

With winter on the horizon, the Streets Ahead gritting fleet are now on standby 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week, until next May and are ready to keep the city moving during periods of ice and snow.

The gritting routes include more than 600 miles of urban and rural roads in Sheffield and the vehicles grit a higher percentage of roads than other local Councils.
