Father's Day each year is when children express thanks to their fathers for all their unconditional love and affection that has been shown to them.

Although the festival is very western, it has recently gained a following in India.

Traditionally Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June although in some parts of Europe it is celebrated on the 19 March which is St Joseph's Day.

So to set aside one day in the year, when we take time to express our thanks for our fathers and to say again we love you, for all the unconditional love that you have shown, makes the day so worthwhile.

The History of Father's Day

Celebrating Father's Day originated in the USA in the 20th century and was a civic celebration to complement Mother's Day. Prior to this time it was only observed as a Catholic tradition, celebrating fatherhood as early as the Middle Ages.

Why celebrate Father's Day?

Father's Day helps both fathers, father figures and children to appreciate just how important their role is in modern society.

The song says: 'You don't know what you've got till it's gone' and for most of us we would say that is very true in regard to our fathers. Some have perhaps not been the best they could be, but millions of others have been all and more than a father should be.

When is Father's Day 2017?

Father's Day in 2017 falls on Sunday 18 June in the UK and also lots of other countries in the world.
