Interview With The Vengaboys

In the late 90's it was hard not to hear the Vengaboys records on the radio or see them on shows such as CD:UK. They have sold 20 million singles and 5 million albums worldwide. Best known for their hits such as We Like To Party, Boom, Boom,Boom, Boom and We're Going to Ibiza the act are now on tour with Steps. The tour visits Leeds and Manchester.

I caught up with original member Robin Pors just after the tour had started.

YOU ARE GOING ON TOUR WITH STEPS IN THE UK, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

Anyone who comes to any of the shows is in for a big party, it will be a lot of fun. It has been going great so far, the UK is one of the best countries to perform in for us. Everyone has been screaming, dancing and giving us a very good reception.

We have known Steps for a long time and they asked us would we like to come and do a tour with them, so we said "Why not?, let's do it!" So here we are. We always put on a good show and it has been fantastic.

We do all the hits such as Boom Boom Boom Boom and We're Going to Ibiza. I urge anyone to come to the show, you will not be disappointed!

WHY DO YOU LIKE PLAYING SHOWS IN THE UK?

Because the audiences in the UK besides Australia are the best in the world, these two countries always give us a great reception.

DO YOU STILL GO TO IBIZA LIKE YOU SING IN THE SONG?

We do, we go every year, it is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Everyone thinks that Ibiza is all about clubbing and the music but that is not the case, Ibiza town has so much history. There is the old fortress above the town looking down on the harbour. We try to get there as many times as we can every year.

WILL THERE BE ANY NEW MUSIC COMING FROM THE VENGABOYS?

Maybe, but we are on tour all the time so it is hard to make new music when you are on tour.

YOU ALWAYS SEEMED TO BE ON CD:UK ON TV BACK IN THE LATE 90's?

It seems a long time ago, it was an amazing show, I remember it was on TV every Saturday morning, we had to get up really early to be on there! They always had great music on there.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT MUSIC SCENE?

I like a lot of it, there are so many good new artists out there right now. I really like Nick Jonas, but coming out of the UK you have Adele and also Sam Smith, you should be so proud of him.

I was saddened by the death of George Michael, I have watched the documentary on him which was on television recently, he was a great artist, we have lost so many good artists recently such as George and then Prince.

YOU SEEM TO BE CONSTANTLY ON TOUR, DO YOU ENJOY IT?

The travelling can be tiring but we do it for the show and the people that like to party with us, it always all comes together on stage and it makes all the travelling worthwhile.

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS?

Of course! I will be spending it with family and friends, I love Christmas and like it to be traditional with the log fire, the food and all the trimmings but first we have the tour with Steps and it is a must see, come and see us, you will have a great time and we are looking forward to the Leeds and Manchester gigs on the tour, you people know how to party!

The Vengaboys are on tour with Steps.
