Sahara Trek For Favourite Charities
106 kilometres over 5 days enduring the Sahara deserts soaring temperatures and unforgiving landscapes, This unlikely bunch of trekkers are just days away from the trip of a lifetime......All in the name of charity.
Assembled by seasoned fund-raiser Geoff Major through friendly networking events such as Yorkshire Mafia, the group have come from all over the Yorkshire and the North East to embark on this journey together.
Uniquely these trekkers are not united by a single cause but are all striving to help a charity of their choice for a number of different reasons, with the combined efforts hoping to raise over £25,000.
Bob Proctor (Aged 56) is looking to challenge himself by swapping the desk for the desert and raising money for Muscular Dystrophy and Cricket United. "I have always wanted to sit and watch the sun set in the desert, This is a wonderful opportunity to fulfil a dream and help others".
Pontefract hotel owner Richard Metcalfe who runs a youth football team in his spare time is raising money for The Prince of Wales Hospice. "We all know a close relative or friend who has been supported by the hospice, I want to help raise as much as I can so this incredible work in our community can continue"
The journey itself will be gruelling with daytime temperatures hitting forty five Celsius and the nights as low as a chilly two degrees, that will no doubt tempt to break the spirit of the group both mentally and physically. Over recent weeks and months the team have bonded on several training walks and are looking forward to the challenge ahead.
The charities being supported by the group:
Crossroads Care in Mid Yorkshire
Spina bifida - Hydrocephalus - Information - Networking - Equality - SHINE
The Prince of Wales Hospice
Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust
Candle Lighters Yorkshire Children's Cancer
