The Gourmet Burger Kitchen, York

Tucked away on Lendal in York, you would have to search out this restaurant as it is not really on the main arteries in the city.

Judging by the number of takeaway orders that are delivered by one of the famous on line delivery companies, it appeared that this area of the York restaurant is what keeps it going.

The decor inside the restaurant looks more like an independent cafe rather than part of a chain. The dark wood panels at the rear of the restaurant make it look darker than it is.

The food we found to be tasty and appetising. With so many Burger restaurants in the marketplace it was good to taste a burger that actually tasted beefy.

I went for the house favourite: the GBK Cheese and Bacon. For £9.85 you get a huge burger served with crispy bacon, BBQ sauce, house mayo, pickle and salad, along with the cheese of your choice. Served with Chunky Skin on Fries for an extra £3.30 it was an enjoyable meal.

My sister went for the Bruce Leek: a burger served with mature cheddar, crispy bacon and truffled leeks. Described as "delicious" it was served with skinny fries which were felt to be a little too skinny.

With other burgers such as The Stack, Major Tom and Avocado Bacon, there is plenty of choice.

Drinks include juices such as Elderflower, Ginger and Lemongrass. We didn't try any of the desserts which are of a very limited choice of ice cream or yogurt.

The food it has to be said was far superior than the service. Most diners seemed to be ignored and I witnessed many having to go up to the counter to order their dessert rather than the server come to the table to take the order. I could understand this if the restaurant was busy but it wasn't overly busy on our early Sunday night visit.

They have a good product. I'm not sure how much repeat business they get or if they have a regular clientele, but if they get the service issue addressed I am sure more people would return.
