The Overtones Give Fans A Night To Remember

Rating - 5/5

The Overtones are an act going from strength to strength. The English-Irish-Australian all-male vocal harmony troupe may have been an all-singing all-dancing group of decorators when they were signed by Warner Brothers back in 2010, but in 2012 they are bona fide international stars.

While the initial response to their debut album 'Good Ol' Fashioned Love' may have been lukewarm (it debuted at number 16 in the album charts), just six months on it's propelled them to number 4 and sold over 500,000 units. Having followed the release with album number 2, 'Higher', earlier this year, which soared straight to number 6 in the charts, The Overtones demonstrated their firmly secured place on the musical map.

With their current sold-out tour drawing to a close, the quintet pull into Sheffield and an excitable audience at the City Hall. With the mixed audience proving the group's diverse appeal, The Overtones will need to ensure an all-inclusive set to outdo the high expectations.

Warm-up with Jessica Clemmons

Before the boys hit the stage, Texan songstress and ex-American Idol starlet Jessica Clemmons takes centre stage. A warm, bubbly presence, Jessica is clearly comfortable and the audience immediately warm to her presence. Far from just a dazzling personality, Clemmons boasts a to-die-for vocal.

Making the most of the limited stage space she is allowed for performance, Jessica Clemmons dances across the stage as she belts like the best of them. Though her Motown medley peaks with 'Rescue Me', it's the spine-tingling title track of her latest album 'Loving This Day' that ensures a rush to the merchandise stand during the interval.

The Overtones mean business

As The Overtones explode onto the stage it's clear the boys mean business. In Sheffield for one reason and one reason alone - to give their fans a night to remember - and dressed in swish suits, the singers earn their pin-up status and are met with swooning screams.

As they burst into the energetic 'Beggin' You', their well-choreographed set skips first gear and heads straight for fifth - a wise move as it's impossible to stay seated while the whole of City Hall erupts into a dance-a-thon. With members of the group sent off to explore the audience for a sing-a-long, temperatures soar as people rush for a touch of their favourite performer.

Relishing every moment, the boys are determined to ensure that everyone leaves with a smile on their face, and rely heavily on banter between their choreographed numbers. Declaring 'we aren't as young as One Direction', they apologise unnecessarily for the well-received interjections. With plugs-a-plenty (apparently 'an ideal stocking filler') for their latest release, the troupe hypnotise with their epic new single - the album's title track - cause havoc with the irrepressible 'Perfect', and seduce with 'Unforgettable'.

While a cover of Cee-Lo Green's 'Forget You' and The Spaniels' 'Goodnight Sweetheart' prove audience favourites, The Overtones are flawless performers who fail to fail on any note. Infectiously friendly, ridiculously talented and woefully good looking, their show proves why The Overtones have soared to the top of the tower, and hints they'll not be disappearing anytime soon.

The Overtones played Sheffield City Hall on 16th December 2012.
