Welcome To Yorkshire Joins Vuelta A España Caravan For An Epic Trip Around Spain
Welcome to Yorkshire have touched down in Spain for the start of the Vuelta a España and will take on a lap of the country in the race’s publicity caravan to raise awareness about the county being a world-class cycling destination.
Four brand new BMW X3’s have been supplied by Global and they have been fully Yorkshire branded with giant red Y’s attached to their roofs to ensure they stand out from the crowd on this epic three-week voyage.
Over the next 21 days they will clock up 3,271km (2,033 miles) and be viewed by millions of roadside cycling fans. The aim is to highlight Yorkshire’s expertise at hosting elite cycling races and to showcase the county as an amazing place for holidaymakers to explore on two wheels.
Welcome to Yorkshire have also expressed an interest in the county hosting the start of a future edition of La Vuelta, which would follow in the footsteps of the 2014 Tour de France and 2019 UCI Road World Championships.
Sir Gary Verity DL, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We’re delighted to be in Spain and are looking forward to raising the profile of Yorkshire across this magnificent country over the next three weeks.
“Being in the race caravan means we’ll be able to showcase our county to a vast new audience. It will allow us to extol the virtues about what a special place Yorkshire is to cycle in, whether you’re a complete beginner or one of the world’s best riders.
“The Vuelta a España is such an iconic cycling event and we would love it to one day start in Yorkshire. The benefits of hosting the world’s best bike races are numerous. Not only do they promote Yorkshire on a truly global scale, they bring vast economic benefits to the county and generate a considerable boost in tourism.
“The 2018 Tour de Yorkshire alone saw 2.6 million people line the route and grow the Yorkshire economy by £98 million. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to bring the UCI Road World Championships to the county in 2019, and why we’d love to see the Vuelta commence here in the future.
“We would certainly give the race a Gran Salida to remember. We want to show that to people across Spain and felt this was a fun and fitting way to do it.”
The race caravan is a much-loved and traditional feature of major cycling events and sees a procession of colourful and brightly decorated vehicles travelling ahead of the riders and distributing goodies to crowds of expectant fans.
The 2018 Vuelta a España gets going in Málaga and will culminate in Madrid on Sunday 16 September. The race has only started outside Spain on three previous occasions. The Portuguese capital of Lisbon was first non-Spanish host in 1997 and it has since travelled to Assen (Netherlands) and Nîmes (France) in 2009 and 2017 respectively.
The Y’s on the roofs of the BMW X3’s have been produced by Three Create and painted red as a homage to the Vuelta a España’s race leader’s jersey which is the exact same colour.
