A Lovely Lady Has Been Lost

Jan Harris (1948-2025)
Jan Harris (1948-2025)
It is with enormous sadness that I have to write about the loss of one of our own. Our lovely editor Jan Harris, who has been with our newspaper group for well over a decade, has sadly died after a long and hard-fought illness.

To say that she will be greatly missed is an understatement. Jan was at the very heart of everything we do here and was a significant part of setting our 'company culture': the way we support our colleagues, how we communicate with each other, how we try to be consistently positive - even when there's too much to do. In all of these things Jan set an exemplary standard for the rest of us to try and follow.

Here's what our colleagues thought of Jan:

Working with Jan was a true gift. For many years, until her illness took its toll, we spoke nearly every day. Our conversations were highlights I always looked forward to.

Jan possessed that rare combination of kindness, thoughtfulness, and unwavering calm that made her presence a sanctuary in our often hectic workplace. Her glass was never merely half-full or half-empty—it was perpetually brimming over with optimism and possibility.
What stood out most about Jan was her selflessness. Even while facing her own challenges, she consistently turned the conversation toward others, asking how they were doing with genuine interest. In all the years I knew her, I only saw her frustrated once—a testament to her remarkable patience and perspective.

Jan transcended being merely a colleague; she was a trusted friend who could be counted on without reservation. Throughout her illness, she never once asked "Why me?" Instead, she faced each day with the same grace and positivity that defined her entire life.

I remember visiting her at the nursing home and hearing from one of the carers: "Gosh, how do you know Jan? She's one of our most popular residents—people are always coming to see her." This didn't surprise me in the least. Jan's innate kindness naturally drew people to her, a reminder that compassion always returns to those who give it so freely.

Jan was, and remains, an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Andrew Palmer, Group Editor

Resolute and indefatigable, Jan continued to work at our newspaper group with astonishing stoicism, in spite of terminal illness. A joy to know, ever friendly, and always there with a helping hand, her loss to our newspaper is, and will remain, immeasurable.
Steve Whitaker, Literary Editor

Jan kindly published most of my automotive ramblings, always with good heart, especially as I’m sure the subject matter held little interest.

My accompanying email usually led to an online chat, on many a subject. You will be greatly missed lovely lady.

I have the fondest memories of Jan, with her purple hair and ‘punk’ attitude to life: quite something for a minister’s wife! She was absolutely lovely and, despite her sufferings, was at the end of the phone when my wife was going through similar challenges. An absolute star who will remain dear to my heart for a long time. God bless and bon voyage Jan xx

I am very thankful for the way in which she welcomed me into the fold. Her encouragement and her feedback were always well received and her playfulness in emails and open mind to article ideas really helped encourage me to build my relationship with the group.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Jan’s passing, since I began writing with our newspaper group she has been a constant friendly presence, someone who was always a bright, supportive and wonderful person in my writing life, always with a kind and encouraging word about my work or myself. I will miss our contact, and am proud to have known her and will always remember and appreciate her kindness. You’ll be very dearly missed Jan. We were lucky to have known you.

Jan was an absolute delight to work with for many years. Passionate about contributing to the series and playing an important role in its continued success. Jan will be very much missed.

As you can see, she was much loved.

Jan was a lady with a strong Christian faith and I can almost feel her telling me off about the title of this piece. She would object to the word 'lost' and have a rather different interpretation of where she is right now. Wherever that is, thanks Jan for being a completely angelic rock-chick, and an absolute delight to have as a friend.
