Tears for Fears return with their first album of new material since 2004. According to their former manager the co-founders of one of the biggest bands of the 1980s should concentrate on touring and playing the retro festivals as their fans would not be interested in hearing new songs.
Thankfully, the duo has decided to write and record this enchanting comeback album which is well worth the eighteen year wait.
There are echos of their past glories on tracks such as
Break The Man which recalls the melodic
Everybody Wants To Rule The World which is also replicated with the looping gait on the title track
The Tipping Point.
Please Be Happy is a heartfelt farewell to Ronald Orzabel’s wife who died due to complications with alcoholism: “I cannot bear to see you in this state of melancholy curled up in your chair” relates the touching lyric.
Carina Round adds a new dimension on
Long, Long, Long Time on a touching ballad which contrasts well with the sublime
End Of Night which will hopefully be included in their live set when they tour this summer.
The dreamy
Secret Location concludes the album with a melodic hook that draws the listener in making you realise why you liked Tears For Fears in the first place.
The advice the former manager gave them is totally misplaced as Tears for Fears are still making music that is as grand and strong as in their prime.
