Memento Mori is an album Dave Gahan and Martin Gore probably never imagined they would make. Although their line-up has changed since their 1980 formation, their 15th studio album is the first to be recorded without founding member, the late and great Andy Fletcher. Even though the band had explored darker moments in their music together, this album is one born out of grief and mourning for not only the band but the band's ever present and loyal audience.
Memento Mori is unsurprisingly a dark affair, but alongside the sense of loss felt within the bones of the record, there is also a real notion of hope, completion, and optimism. While the duo has admitted they always felt Fletch would outlive them, the record finds its magic in a sense of acceptance.
While the record centres on the band's signature sound, if also has an understated edge that is a shift from their more direct electronic leanings. This move is tenderly beautiful and adds a touching finish to the record's more intimate moments.
Whilst the album has a few stand out moments -
Ghosts Again, Soul With Me, Never Let Me Go, Before We Drown - this is an album best enjoyed as a body whole.
Depeche Mode won't ever be the band they once were, but the duo that continues show that the band they will become is equally notable.
