After a six-year break, James Morrison returns with his new album, Fight Another Day, showcasing his soulful yet gravelly vocals as he tackles themes of strength, vulnerability, and hope.

Most of the album took shape during 2023 – a time of reflection and healing for Morrison.

A few of the tracks have already been released as singles – the title track sees him in a buoyant and resilient mood, whilst Closest Thing to Love harks back to his classic songwriting style that brought Morrison his initial success on a track that deserves to rule the charts if not just the radio airwaves.

Cry Your Tears on Me captures a different side of Morrison’s artistry with a song unlike anything he has done before. It’s a driving, melodic pop-rock song which will bring a different energy to the new album and future live songs – his penchant for affecting emotions remains as powerful as ever, this time with a lyric that feels like an embrace from an old friend: sharing heartbreak opens up fresh hope for the future.

Little Wings is a timeless soul in the very best of traditions, as his voice simmers with heartfelt emotion and expression, complete with heavenly, hymnal backing vocals courtesy of Andy Platt (Young Gun Silver Fox) and one of Morrison's childhood idols, Connor Reeves. Its serene vibe is elevated by another affecting touch, with a harmonica solo inspired by the great Stevie Wonder. Its lyrics are just as positive as he celebrates the simple joys of family life.

Positivity is the key to the theme that flows throughout the album. Mental health is key, as his songs aim to celebrate everything that’s good in life as well as to inspire a fighting spirit to just keep going. Life can be relentlessly tough, and perhaps things won’t change quickly – but perseverance means that they can change in time, for the better.
