(Sony Music/EMI) CDYBXNOW90

This new compilation of the Now music series concentrates on the year 1990. The year was a transitional one for popular music: the songs from the Madchester scene were beginning to infiltrate the charts, as witnessed here with The Stone Roses' One Love, and Happy Mondays' Step On, while the sparks of the immerging dance music scene were beginning to ignite with crossover tracks like Naked in the Rain by Blue Pearl and What Time is Love by KLF.

The diversity and creativity of a stellar year in pop continue with rock gems from Skid Row and Faith No More. The production and writing trio Stock, Aitken, and Waterman still had a hold on the singles chart with hits from Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, though they too started to diversify by combing the resurging Italian house music scene with their traditional pop approach on Lonnie Gordon's Happen' All Over Again.

A number of tracks here include some of the one-hit wonders from 1990, including Black Velvet by Alannah Myles, Hold On by Wilson Phillips, and Could Have Told You So by Halo James.

While some of the tracks have stood the test of time, there are others that sound dated in 2024, such as Technotronic and Partners in Kryme.

For anyone who fondly remembers 1990 or who wants to discover what the charts contained in this particular year, this is a good representation.
