Blackburn School Enjoys Dream Day At Wembley In Utilita Kids Cup Final
Ahead of the EFL Championship Play-Off Final between Hull City and Middlesbrough, the U11 side stepped out in front of thousands of supporters to take on Dulverton Primary School, representing Blackburn Rovers.
Before kick-off, the players met EFL legend Glenn Murray, with the former striker sharing a few words of encouragement ahead of their big moment at Wembley (a nice photo of this is attached). After a tense and evenly matched contest, neither side could find a breakthrough in normal time, meaning the final went straight to penalties. Langho St Leonards held their nerve in the shootout to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory - lifting the Utilita Kids Cup trophy in the Royal Box as Glenn and football freestyler Ben Nuttall watched on.
The win continues Blackburn Rovers’ impressive recent history in the competition, following Salesbury C of E Primary School’s triumph last year. Notably, Salesbury also lifted the trophy a decade earlier with future Blackburn Rovers and England midfielder Adam Wharton in their side.
After picking up the Player of the Match award, Langho St Leonards’ Cody said: "It's amazing, I'm buzzing and I've got Player of the Match. It was crazy to be picked for this award. I can't speak. Everyone worked so hard throughout the game."
The school added: “The boys are CHAMPIONS! Well done boys, you have done yourself and everyone proud with this spectacular achievement."
The Utilita Kids Cup is one of the country’s largest football competitions for schoolchildren, with more than 20,000 boys and girls representing EFL clubs each year across England and Wales.
As well as giving children the opportunity to play at Wembley Stadium, the competition inspires young people to stay active, healthy and develop confidence and teamwork through football. Former participants include Jamal Musiala, Adam Wharton and Scott McTominay.
