British Wool has officially unveiled its 2025 Sheep of the Year, following an enthusiastic public vote celebrating the very best of Britain’s woolly wonders.

Each week, British Wool shares its ‘Sheep of the Week’ to Instagram, showcasing photos sent in by farmers from across the UK. From playful spring lambs to characterful flocks braving the depths of winter, the series captures sheep in all their seasonal glory and has become a firm favourite with followers.

After months of sharing standout submissions, British Wool invited the public to help decide which of the year’s favourites would take the top title – and the result is now in.

Voters were asked to choose from 12 fleecy contenders, each representing the diversity and charm of the UK’s native breeds. With more than 90 sheep breeds - from hardy hill and mountain sheep to thriving lowland varieties - selecting a single winner is no small task.

Sheep of the Year is a light-hearted and fun way to see in the new year - but at its core, it reflects something much deeper. Sheep farming plays a vital role in our rural landscapes, our farming communities, and in the production of one of Britain’s most sustainable natural fibres.

Sheep of the Year gives us a chance to celebrate the character, resilience and sheer variety of British sheep, while recognising the farmers who care for them year-round. The response to the vote shows just how strongly people connect with these animals - and just how cute our many different sheep breeds can be!
