The charisma between Francesca Dego, Sir Roger Norrington and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra has not diminished since volume 1. It is beguiling and one feels present through wonderful musicianship and Chandos’ recording engineers superbly judging the balance.
Sir Roger Norrington writes that to do justice to Mozart he considers six ‘S’s that place him in his historical perspective: sources, size, seating, speed, sound, and style, his reasoning he expounds on in the notes. It explains why these recordings capture Mozart’s brilliance.
The lightness of touch from both soloist and orchestra runs like a soft electric current through each of the concertos. Little sparks along the way that glitter and shine with rhythmic vitality.
The way the dynamics are applied is impressive and highly effective. The KV 219, the ‘Turkish’, given the sobriquet because the final movement is probably based on Hungarian folk music, is like the other concertos elegantly interpreted. Such is its hypnotic effect one awakes shortly after the gentle ending feeling cheerier.
The disc has a chic sparkle and is an album I will turn to regularly because for me, they surpass my other recordings of Mozart violin concertos, in the way one is drawn into the music through highly sophisticated interpretations coupled with beautiful playing from all the musicians.
