Croda Repositioning And Delivery Tech Drive Multi-Sector Growth

Volufiline

FTSE 100 speciality chemicals group Croda International has highlighted the commercial repositioning of an established active ingredient alongside advancements in delivery science as key drivers of its operational and half-year financial performance.

The Snaith-headquartered company, which manufactures high-value ingredients for personal care, pharmaceuticals, and industrial markets, detailed the resurgence of Volufiline—a plant-derived beauty active originally launched over a decade ago—in its latest financial disclosures.

GLP-1 Demand and Global Market Realignment

The East Yorkshire-based manufacturer has repositioned the product to target consumer demand for cosmetic solutions addressing facial volume loss. Industry interest in topically applied volumising agents has risen alongside the global uptake of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, such as semaglutide, which can lead to rapid reductions in facial fat tissue.

Volufiline, an anhydrous solution rich in sarsasapogenin extracted from the root of Anemarrhena asphodeloides, is supplied by Croda to third-party cosmetics brands for inclusion in topical skincare formulations. Data cited by the firm showed a threefold increase in customer requests to use Croda’s ingredient trademarks over the past 12 months, accompanied by higher social media engagement within consumer skincare markets.

Sandra Breene, President of Consumer Care at Croda, commented: "Volufiline is a strong example of Croda's innovation model in action. While developing new ingredients remains critical to long-term growth, innovation is not only about launching new technologies. It is also about identifying new opportunities for existing ingredients and helping customers respond to evolving consumer needs.

"The renewed success of Volufiline demonstrates how we can help customers respond rapidly to changing consumer trends while maximising the value of our innovation investments. It is a powerful example of how established technologies can deliver meaningful commercial growth for both our customers and Croda."

Cross-Sector Expansion in Delivery Science

Alongside product repositioning, Croda is expanding the application of its delivery science and formulation technologies across its global operations, targeting performance enhancements in skincare, pharmaceuticals, and consumer fragrances.

Encapsulation
Encapsulation
The chemical specialist uses encapsulation technology—microscopic systems that shield active ingredients and regulate their release—to improve product stability, extend duration of use, and support environmental sustainability across its portfolio.

Key developments include applying encapsulation to cosmetic peptides such as Matrixyl Neolide to extend skin application benefits for up to 15 days, as well as creating biodegradable polyurea microcapsules for alcohol-free fragrance systems via its Iberchem division. In pharmaceuticals, the group is integrating predictive machine-learning models to overcome challenges with poorly soluble medicines.

Customers increasingly need solutions that help them innovate faster, improve performance and meet evolving consumer and market expectations. Delivery science is one of the ways Croda helps address those challenges.

What makes this capability particularly valuable is its breadth. The same scientific expertise can be applied across Beauty, Fragrances and Life Sciences, helping customers solve different challenges while leveraging common technologies and know-how. Across the Group, we are demonstrating how we translate scientific capability into commercial value.
