Age UK York is proud to announce that award-winning actress Dame Judi Dench has become the charity’s new Patron. Her kind support comes at a crucial time as the local organisation works to help older people through the winter months and its continuing mission to make a positive difference to the lives of older people of York.

Dame Judi Dench, Patron of Age UK York, said, “Being born in York our city has been close to my heart all my life. I am delighted to have the opportunity to become the Patron for York’s local Age UK – Age UK York – and support the wonderful difference the charity makes each day in supporting local older people and those around, them across the city.”

Simon Holmes, Chief Executive of Age UK York, said: “Although we’re part of the national Age UK network, Age UK York is an independent local charity that has existed to support older people in York for over 50 years. Dame

Judi’s kindness in agreeing to become our Patron is truly wonderful for both our charity and the city and our older residents.

Every penny raised by those choosing to support Age UK York goes directly to supporting older people in York through our essential services — including information and advice, post-hospital support, dementia activities, pet care, independence support, financial guidance, and more. We rely on our communities to help us improve the lives of older people in our city including our wonderful staff and volunteers giving back to help others.”

Born in York in 1934, Dame Judi is lending her voice to Age UK’s national winter campaign, highlighting how difficult the season can be for many older people, including here in York.

She said: “Christmas is meant to be a time of light, warmth and being together. Yet for so many older people, it can be a time of silence - days without conversation or company.

"That’s why I’m proud to support Age UK this Christmas. With your help, they can bring a meaningful connection to older people . They work locally and nationally to give comfort and support where it’s needed most. Let's act now and support Age UK, and help make this winter a little better for those who are spending it alone.”

Simon added: “Together, we can make a real difference. Dame Judi’s support shows the power of working as a community. By supporting Age UK York this winter, you can help ensure no older person in our city feels forgotten or alone as together we strive to Stamp Our Loneliness.”
