Law firm Freeths’ Trainee Legal Executive Maxwell McCartney has won Yorkshire Emerging Male Leader at the Business Hero Awards 2026.

The Business Hero Awards celebrate individuals who are making a positive impact beyond their core roles, recognising leadership, community contribution and social responsibility across the Yorkshire region.

The Yorkshire Emerging Male Leader category recognises an individual at an early stage of their career who has demonstrated outstanding leadership potential, commitment to learning and personal development, and a strong contribution to charitable and community initiatives.

Maxwell was recognised for his enthusiastic contribution to the Freeths’ culture, including his involvement in charity events, learning initiatives and activities in the office that bring colleagues together. This includes his fundraising efforts for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

The judges praised Maxwell’s energy, commitment and clear leadership potential, highlighting the positive influence he has already had within his firm and the wider professional community.

Commenting on his award win, Maxwell McCartney said: “Winning Yorkshire Emerging Male Leader is something I never expected, and I’m incredibly grateful. Freeths places such a strong emphasis on charity, inclusion, learning and togetherness, and I’ve been lucky to develop in an environment where junior voices are encouraged and supported.

“The Leeds office has a real culture of getting involved, particularly through our ongoing support for Martin House Children’s Hospice, as well as across lunches, learning sessions and wider initiatives. I’m thankful for the continued investment the firm makes in its people, and I’m excited to continue building on that momentum.”

The award follows Maxwell being named Professional Services Apprentice of the Year at the 2025 West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards, marking back‑to‑back recognition for his contribution and progression early in his career.
