From Frightened To Fascinated: A Family's Verdict On Tutankhamun: The Immersive Experience
Our visit to Tutankhamun: The Immersive Experience at the NEC was nothing short of extraordinary.
My son, Calum, aged 9, has been studying Ancient Egypt at school and is absolutely fascinated by the subject, so this exhibition was already high on our list of family days out. My daughter, Skye, who is 5, was a little more hesitant beforehand, but the immersive nature of the experience proved to be a revelation for both of them.
The highlight of the exhibition was undoubtedly the large-scale 25-minute film experience. It was fascinating, educational, and beautiful to look at. It brought the story of Tutankhamun and Ancient Egypt to life in a way that books can't. Skye was initially somewhat frightened, convinced that the chairs were moving because of the powerful imagery swirling around us. However, after a reassuring cuddle and the discovery that she could stomp on some of the moving projected images, she was quickly drawn back into the experience and thoroughly enjoyed herself.
The seated VR exhibition was fascinating and provided a unique viewpoint on the ancient world. Remarkably, it was immediately topped by the Meta experience that followed, which was truly impressive. Holding both my children's hands throughout meant that I couldn't interact with or 'touch' some of the virtual objects, but watching their awe-struck reactions and sharing the experience together made it even more enjoyable.
Afterwards, we enjoyed the AI photo experience, creating imaginative reworked images of ourselves before leaving our creations in the gallery. Then came the inevitable stop at the gift shop, which proved far too tempting and left my wallet considerably lighter!
As we left, both children were already discussing when we could return, noting with excitement that the exhibition runs until August. That alone shows just how much they enjoyed it.
More than simply an educational experience, the Tutankhamun: The Immersive Experience is a genuine wonder for both adults and children. It succeeds in making history feel alive, immersive and accessible, creating lasting memories alongside valuable learning. We would happily recommend it to families, history enthusiasts and anyone looking for a truly memorable day out.
The experience will run from 19th June – 13th September for a limited 12-week run.
