Holi-dogs: Taking Your Canine Cruising!

If the thought of being parted from your trusty mutt for more than a moment is painful, but the desire to go cruising is still in your blood, then panic ye not, cruising could be the answer!

Google Trends data shows a 133% increase in “dog-friendly holidays” compared to 10 years ago.

And, according to Dogs Trust, 70% of owners enjoy taking their canines on holiday; looking for accommodation options that will accept dogs, such as hotels, self-catered holiday lets and even cruiselines!

British cruise line, Cunard, operates the ‘Pets on Board’ programme, allowing owners to take their pets along.
In 1963 Jimmy the three-year-old hippo made his way from Naples, Italy to Chester Zoo, travelling on deck with an awning over his cage to protect him from the sun!

Today, however, dogs and cats can travel with their owners across the Atlantic on board Queen Mary 2 for a truly unique cruise experience, with no other cruise lines currently offering this option.

There are 24 kennels, play areas onboard the ship and a dedicated owner’s lounge.

Prices start from £915 and range anywhere from 7 – 14 nights, however, some passages opt for up to 26 nights in total.

Dave Mills, Chief Executive Officer at Iglu Cruise said:“Many passengers want to bring their pets with them on holiday, and the Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 allows just that.

“Your four-legged friends can come aboard for an adventure across the Atlantic, staying in one of the 24 kennels onboard the ship. A kennel master looks after them, ensuring all their needs are met and making sure they are all comfortable. Bedding is provided and each pet is allotted time for regular outdoor exercise on deck 12.”

There are four set visiting times per day (seven hours in total, spread throughout the day). Owners can also choose to walk and feed their pets during this time, or have the kennel master help out.

Special treats, including room service, can be delivered to pets in the kennel, making their stay extra special. There is also a professional photographer onboard the ship who offers pet photoshoots to capture special memories of pet-friendly trips.

Owners need to provide feeding and dietary requirements for their pets when booking, as well as a full profile of information for each pet, including medical history and any existing conditions. Only one pet is allowed in each kennel.
