Layer8, a Hull-based IT solutions provider, has launched a new initiative offering regional businesses free digital health checks to identify critical vulnerabilities in their software and systems. The move comes as data from the National Cyber Security Centre reveals a 50% surge in "highly significant" cyberattacks during 2025.

The service provides a detailed audit of a company’s digital infrastructure, pinpointing out-of-date software and insecure login practices using industry benchmarks. Participating firms receive a comprehensive report outlining existing weaknesses and future risks, with the entire diagnostic process requiring approximately one hour of the client's time.

Alex Sheppard, Cybersecurity Lead at Layer8, said: “Cybersecurity incidents are potentially one of those most costly and damaging issues a business will face but, all too often, they don’t appreciate the importance of having robust cybersecurity measures until it’s too late."

Layer8 was established as an independent company after serving for 30 years as the internal IT department for the Spencer Group. The firm now offers its expertise to SMEs across Hull and the East Riding.



How to access the free IT health check

The service is available to all businesses in the Hull and East Riding region, particularly those maintaining core server infrastructure.

Online: Businesses can register their interest directly via the Layer8 website.

While the health check includes recommendations and information on the firm’s 'Secure' and 'Secure+' packages, there is no obligation for participating businesses to commit to ongoing services.
