Interview With Lucie Jones

Lucie Jones is an artist who means something different to each of her fans. For some she is talented vocalist who was robbed of victory on The X Factor. To others she is the best Eurovision entry sent by the UK in the last decade. And to some she is up there with the finest musical theatre performers the UK has ever performed. For her new studio album she channels the latter. To learn a little more, we caught up with her...

First and foremost, hello and how are you?

HELLO! I am very well thank you - despite these interesting times I am doing OK. Very grateful for my health!

Tell us about Live At The Adelphi...

We recorded the album live in front of a 1500 sold out audience at The Adelphi Theatre in London, accompanied by a full orchestra (LMTO). It was, simply put, the most incredible night of my career. You can hear the audience very clearly on the album. I will always remember going out on to the stage for the first time that night and being SO grateful for such a warm and wonderful audience!

Fans have been waiting a long time for new music, what prompted the new release?

I had a break in schedule coming up- Freddie Tapner (LMTO CEO and my best pal) and I were sat in my dressing room at the Adelphi, where I was in Waitress at the time, conducting plans. What was due to be a small concert at a 100 capacity venue quickly escalated to booking a huge venue and the orchestra for a recorded album! It was terrifying, but felt like the perfect timing.

What inspired the record?

I chose songs that I hold close to my heart for this record. Some of which are from my career so far, some tunes that I just love to sing at home in the shower. I'm really happy with the flow of the tracks and the audience responded so well. I was chuffed.

Tell us a little about your creative process...

We had approx 40 songs we wanted to do- obviously that is far too many! We played through and through at rehearsals with Freddie on keys and me singing along until we came to our final set list. We then sent the setlist to our amazing arrangers and put the rest to bed. The Sitz for the gig was in the week leading up to it (full orchestra and vocal rehearsal) at which I cried for 4 hours straight- it was AMAZING. After the gig we chose to put a second CD together with some of our early rehearsal recordings. Songs that didn’t make it to the setlist can be heard in their early idea stages.

Alongside your musical theatre work, you have dabbled with pop. Do you see a time when you might return to pop?

Absolutely. I write constantly and listen to pop every day.

Define your sound in five words...

Passionate. Story telling. BIG. Authentic.

What was the best concert you have ever seen?

Oasis and the Foo Fighters, noise for confusion at the Millennium stadium, Cardiff.

What did the experience teach you that you have translated to your own shows?

Nothing is ever too extra! I was so overwhelmed by the production, the lights, the noise. I have learned so much from the variety of watching a show like that. Those huge moments sandwiching a quite acoustic moment. amazing!

Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview...

I have rarely taken more pleasure out of something than the tomato plant I grew during lockdown.
