It's Just My Opinion, But I Thought Kemi Badenoch Was Disgraceful
I listened to Kemi Badenoch on the Today programme this morning, and I was appalled. It's not just Kemi Badenoch; it's the system. What on earth is the matter with politicians when their central focus seems to be the destruction of their opponents? What's wrong with governing the country? Why not give it a go? You never know; it might just work out well.
Kemi Badenoch has laid into Keir Starmer over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as Ambassador to the USA. On one hand, that's an awful decision, but look at it the other way: the USA is an ideal new-generation penal colony. Now that Australia seems to have become a fine, upstanding country, we need a new place to send all our dodgy citizens. Immigration may be off the agenda for the United States, but a certain English-speaking white male with dubious friends would, one might imagine, be most welcome there.
But Kemi, Kemi, Kemi... can you not see the problem here? If you (like all of your predecessors) call for the head of the Prime Minister because of an admittedly stupid decision, then it's not just the Prime Minister him/herself who becomes 'untenable', but the position itself. Surely the logical endpoint of this continual attrition is that, eventually, after an awful lot of kerfuffle and distress amongst the general public, a strong man/woman will arise. That new Prime Minister will not listen to criticism; that new Prime Minister will pass laws to make himself/herself immune to criticism, and lo, the problem will be solved. That's autocracy, love. That's the inevitable conclusion to this constant dousing with battery acid that seems to pass as our system of government. Frankly, it needs to change.
Is Keir Starmer perfect? Of course not. He has infamously made over a dozen U-turns since gaining an overwhelming mandate just over a year ago. But even Kemi Badenoch would struggle to keep a straight face if she doubted his integrity. Love him or not, surely that has to be a fundamentally positive attribute for a leader of our country. And an attribute that has been sadly lacking for some time - I have Boris Johnson and Liz Truss firmly in the frame here.
We have a current Prime Minister who is not perfect, but neither is he Satan. If you oppose his views, Ms Badenoch, then propose your alternative ideas, argue your case and bring us to your cause; don't just light a fire under the whole system and stand back hoping to pick up whatever remains after the embers have died away. And be very careful; we the people might just get fed up with the lot of you and vote in a complete plonker, one with little or no integrity, other than rampant self-interest. It happened in the USA, and see how that's working out.
