The biggest timetable change on the East Coast Main Line in more than a decade will bring significant economic benefits, generating millions of pounds for local economies.
The new timetable, which launched yesterday, will see the introduction of an additional 10,000 LNER services per year and 60,000 extra seats available each week, unlocking further opportunities for local Yorkshire and Humber communities and businesses.
Independent research shows that LNER contributes £3.11 billion annually to the UK economy, delivering £3.70 in economic, social and environmental benefits for every £1 spent.
Currently, LNER services generate £672 million a year for the Yorkshire and Humberside area, with the new timetable expected to deliver an additional £42.5 million of benefits annually.
Beyond offering more seats and greater choice, the new timetable will also bring wider benefits to the local economy, including increased recruitment of frontline rail colleagues to support the expanded services. Local businesses within the LNER supply chain will also benefit from job creation, driven by higher demand.
In preparation for more customers choosing to travel by rail, York Railway Station has recently benefited from investment with the addition of a vibrant and welcoming Family Lounge.
James Downey, Finance Director at LNER, said: “These are exciting times for LNER and the rail industry. Every day, our services strengthen the UK – connecting people, driving economic growth, and creating new opportunities. With more services and greater choice, we’ll continue to deliver benefits for our local businesses and communities across our route.”
